Gotta Pull Down

Gotta Pull Down

My favourite place to be
Was at the wheel of a rock and roll van
Rolling the country with blue skies and semis
Driving to a different band

Then the car pool stopped
And your luck ran out
Were you a woman or a man?
You gotta pull down
The frequencies found
A way into the sound

My favourite way to be
Was under lights and up on the stage
Dancing on floorboards, creaking some backbones
Singing to the ghost up the back

Then the stage show stopped
‘Cause the dog took off
With the needle and the strings
You gotta pull down
Make the best of the light
Shine it back to those who bend

I’ve pulled down what I had
I’ve pulled down what I heard in my head
It comes from a place
Everybody’s been
You know it well
The sound can swell

Gotta pull down
Gotta pull down
Gotta pull down
Gotta pull down

My favourite way to be
Was under lights and up on a stage
Dancing on floorboards, creaking their backbones
Singing to the ghosts up the back

Then the contracts stopped
Cause the words burned out
With the feelings from the shame
You gotta pull down
Make the best of the light
Shine it back to those who bend

Shadow of the Fire

August 6, 2019

Separately
I held you near
And I stored you
Like a cigarette behind my ear

I wanted you
All to myself
Unassisted
Like a hand that offers no help

And the fire’s gone
With the croakin’ of the timber
The sounds of a stranger
Reproach disintegrating cinders

For some warmth
For some light
I’m alone
In the blackness of its light
In the dark glow
Still some citrus embers
Dying in the night

The isolation
Is like a black crow high in the trees
Its stony calls
To the anger in the breeze blowin’

Now the fire’s gone
With the croakin’ of timber
The sounds of a stranger
Approach disintegratin’ cinders

For some warmth
For some life
I’m alone
In the blackness of your light
In the dark glow
The citrus embers
Are dying in the night

Kissed your face in shadow of the fire

Warmed your cold hands near the fire on that night

I’m alone
I’m alone
Dying in the night

And the fire’s gone
With the croaking of the timber
The breath of a stranger
Blows to captivate reminders

Into light
Intro warmth
I’m alone in the blackness of night
But in your glow

There’s still some citrus embers
Dying forth in the night

Book Lungs

July 29, 2019

Book Lungs

I miss the smell of split hardwood
And the weight of carrying something good
Finding and offloading firewood
That used to be me.

The thought appends to me
Like a spider’s web to a bloody finger
The acting and accounting
For entanglement.

Breathe like a spider
The book lungs of a spider

The fire, water, wind
And the sound of earthly sorrows
Couldn’t put the web down into the dirt
Nor settle on its incredible worth.

The spider quavers from left to right
The fits of agitation and disorder
Breathe happenings for nothing.

Breathe like a spider
The book lungs of a spider

Page by page
Leaf by leaf
Song by song

Until all firewood has been carried and burned out.

Post Note

April 16, 2019

Hey Folks,

Last year, I experienced my last nervous performance in Melbourne at the Old Bar. Thanks to the team and friends who were there to witness my unplanned goodbye.

Officially, this is an official big thanks to everyone who has supported my 25-year performing history in Brisbane, starting in the Valley in 1993 and ending in mid 2018. My first venue gig was in the Valley at the Empire Hotel, followed up with gigs at the Zoo, cafes, bars, clubs and touring with Brisbane band, gota cola from 1996. I always wanted to be in a band (not actually a soloist, but hey…)

I will continue to write for myself and others who want to hear/see my art, and if gota cola ever got the courage or support to play again…I think that would be a nice way to catch up with old friends. Sea Life Park??

I gave performing a good crack and would like to give thanks to all the people who gave me a chance and allowed me the privilege of singing along with them, both on records and on stage.

I’ve had some good dreams within this world — singing at Festival Hall for EasyCheese, Livids, Big Day Outs, and beloved venues like the Zoo, (always the Zoo), Rics (always Rics), Babble-on….God, that place was an incredible blast, and Two Faces of Eve!! These places were the building blocks for my experience in Brisbane.

I am an introvert and its really time to officially go inward to where no Tylea has gone before. Please stay in contact via here if you feel like a chat one day; I don’t want to get too lonely.

Many thanks,

T x
